36 Nostalgic tales : Illayaraja's 16 Vayathiniley

I recently received an interesting forward articulating nostalgic experience on Isaignani Illayaraja's "16 Vaythiniley" experience. I felt , It was worthwhile to translate in English and listen to these songs with context of it composition. Thanks to the writer who had captured the story well..glad and humbly acknowledge the same

Since this was a filim with low budget, apparently Raja sir wanted to limit the costs from the onset of the recording, Keeping that in mind, he had requested poet laureate Kannadasan's assistant Kannappan to reduce the salary to half. The greatness of Kannadasan was such that,He just walked in to the studio without any hassle with an only intention to write for Raja.

Bhartiraja the director of the movie narrated the placement of the song and context , Kavignar, has enquired on the tune which was half heartedly Okayed by Bharathiraja .. This was the song "Chevvandhi Poo Mudinja Chinnaka"

------------------------

The second song, was composed with a context the hero Chappani (Kamal) is trying make Mayil (Sridevi) laugh as she is in a very sober state , the song is

-----------------------

Bharti and I had already been thinking about this grandmother. "What grandma! Mancak kuliccirukkiye! '" He asked, "Old ninaipputa peranti' remember that we had listened to the village. I mean, this woman is our opinion that it would be better if you can sort of tell. But it did not tell the poet.

Kavinaro song "Lamb on eggs' shown Crone set up the launching of the" old-old ninaipputa ninaipputa peranti ...! '' She says in conclusion.

We are saying, the poet wrote to us in our minds that it was surprising. It had become a poet and Saraswati.

"Chrysanthemum flower finish 'made the decision that we can sing the song espipalacuppiramaniyattai, invited them to rehearsals. Balu came. All rehearsals take-over Baalu invited separately." Palu rattiriyellam Leave cuttaratai out. I went out for friends. Do cuttinatula Trail throat kattikkittutunnu dawn to dawn. Otherwise, the song will go to someone else, '' he said.

Balu 'yes' when he failed to adjust said.

At 7 o'clock the next morning eviemm've compose the song Me ï cikkaiyellam. Breakfast the following morning at 9 over pirekkai `puja started.

Having begun rehearsals for the song of 11 hours to prepare forms.

Balu has not yet come. We searched for different accusations. At 11-30 Palu to come straight to me, "Dei! Tontaiyellam poccuta hug ... '', and said the matter kattaikkural.

"Saw? Nette I said, do not you? That came cencittu nikkariye '' I said.

Paratiyitamum me carita '' he said Balu left.

Retiyakivittatu everything. Janaki Chorus rehearsals is over too.

Paluvukkuppatil Whom to sing? `Tirakkai alone has the habit of making the record. And it will be recorded during the prayer song. Should be singing.

Just wondering. Malaysia Vasudevan was a prayer that came to my account.

Malaysia Vasudevan called. "Start learning the song that taught the song.

Vasu have confirmed it, to sing a song he recorded.

Unavukkuppiraku lunch, "Lamb eggs' to record the song.

Vasu to sing like this, and made a lame man.

But in rehearsals vacuvo sing everything all right, "when the tag converter pativittar. 'Subject to ignorant person might think that everyone sings to us patatteriyatu' enappayantu, as with normal playback singer

Pativittarituvarai now go waste all the effort I had to be unaccompanied song

Nirakivittatuippotum yourself by listening to the song. Elimaittanam which will be an ignorant boor bottle. Singing villager who would be similar to the detail.

As a prolific composer of such losses.

Next it was time to record the song.

Peacock (Sridevi) How does he imagine that his dream lover in the mood for the song said that Bharti.

'This song may be similar to those of any of the directors composer. Or is this model that apiprayamo, counsel or does not say. Song explained the situation, as well as leave. Composer, poet and what to pay, so accept it.

If necessary, ask a minor change is needed. They will get it immediately.

The song was put on display some of the D ï nkalai. No wonder Bharti favorite model. Then put yourself in a T ï, "Bharti! It would be better, '' he insisted. That" centurappuve ... 'song tune. Ï amaintuvittat further fine tune `t's" left not compose anything. So that the D ï ntan katcikkenru conclusion.

"The Met say the poet to write a song? '' He asked Bharati." Write with someone new, "said Bharati. In addition, notwithstanding "Why amarane elutattume '' he said.

All of us, including the poet Kannadasan kavinarakat terintareyanri session only, it does not appear kavinarakak anyone else. Amaran 'write' Bharati said that I did not say anything in response. Amaran that do not prevent

35. Aayarpaadi Maaligaiyil - Melodious and blissful Krishna Gaanam

35. Aayarpaadi Maaligaiyil - Melodious and blissful Krishna Gaanam

As few of you already know and follow the daily Sri Aandal Paasurams  in English : http://timeisthemaster.blogspot.in/  and in Tamil :http://kalathinkatalai.blogspot.in/ I'm compiling during this month of Maargazhi .. while completing the post for day 5.. i got reminded of a lovely rendering of one and only SPB composed by Late M S V written by Kaviyarasu Kannadasan - yes the anthem of Krishna songs in Tamil  "Sri Krishna Gaanam." -"Aayar paadi Maligayil"

Sri Krishna Gaanam, is said to be a stand alone track which does not feature in any movies. This was recorded for an audio company in a very short span of time right from the composition to the lyrics and recording. were done in few hours is what I'm informed from an interview .Every song is a gem and a master piece. Its a standing example of excellence at work. The whole album, has around eight songs rendered by the leading artists ..the album follows through a grammar .Each and every song captures various stories as metaphors from Srmad Bagavada and Mahabharatha ..any one who listens to these songs is sure to have goose bumps for two reasons one for the music whether you understand the language or not and other for the meaningful and soulful lyrics when you understand the language, Here is a quick short note on each of the song, as  I always say this is an attempt of a layman to write upon a glorious piece of work and description is subjected to limitedness of my awareness and not of the great work rendered by the legends.

01.Guruvayooruku Vaarungal - sung by Smt P Susheela .. the song captivates the day to day events of Guruvayoor and one can experience the Guruvayoor seeveli by listening to the song..the fragrance of ghee and warmth will fill the air when the singer chants Narayana - Narayana- Hari Hari Narayana Narayana.

02.Pullanguzhal Kodutha Moongilgaley - Sung By TMS..one of the very famous songs of the album .. highlights the beauty of Lord Krishna with a metaphors of nature and alikes..! simply astounding

03.Gopiyarey Gopiyarey - Sung by Smt L R Eswari, is a lively folk - gummi paatu which calls the damsel of Ayarpadi to sing and dance praising Lord Krishna in various forms..it captures various miracles performed by Sri Krishna in Aayarpaadi

04.Aayarpaadi Maaligaiyil - Sung by S PB-- which was the beginning point of this post..once the play list started .. i felt the entire album is wonderful that it would be unfair to just pick only one song..A lovely lullaby which must have drawn me to doze has kindled me to blog about the whole album...

05. Gokulathil Oru Naal Raadhai : Sung by Smt P Susheela again a song highlighting romance and Oodal between the lovers. The song is elevated to the greatest level with the amazing tabla work and narration written by Kaviyarasar

06. Gokulathil Pasukal ellam : Sung by Smt S Janaki.. highlights the abundance in Ayarpaadi because of lord krishna...

07.Kothayin Thirupaavai :  Sung by Sri Veeramani is song welcoming Lord Krishna and narrates the beauty of Lord Krishna's arrival with set of metaphors of nature and instances of Srimad Bagavada and Mahabharatha

08.Amarajeevitham Swami Amudha Vaahanam: Sung by MSV himself and what a way to wrap up the album with divine OM lingering through out in Mridangam and takes to a level of serenity..At the outset if one listens it would appear like a random sprinkling of lyrics across the song but its actually  a well written chain of sanskrit verses customized in Tamil album

In Short, this is the anthem of Sri Krishna songs in Tamil and has been invariably part of all Sri Krishna Jayanthi celebrations all around and considering the age of the song and it remains as young and lively its for sure it would be there forever for another century.

Sarvam Krishnaarpanam.!!!

034 : Dola re Dola Vs Pinga - An attempt to recreate magic

Sanjay Leela Bhansali , needs no introduction the maker of Devdas and Black is back this time with his next magnum opus Bajirao Mastani . The makers of movie are leaving no stone unturned to create the hype. After Devdas, its Bajirao Mastani that has created a curiosity. For me personally, I'm keen to look forward for the songs and their making. The songs Gajanana and Deewani Mastani are good, but my expectation was on the song Pinga..

Lovely dance choreography and extremely well coordinated effort visible, though Deepika is lively its Priyanka steals the show.  Personally , I feel Priyanka and Deepika duo fail to create the magic Madhuri and Aishwarya . For some reason, the background of the song is dull and and the celebration aspect seem to be missing ..The voice of Shreya Goshal peps up the song and balances out the gap in making. All said and done..this is the best song in the recent past. Here are the songs which had rekindled and directed me to blog after a long gap,

033 : Namo Namo Narayana.. - Sri Ranganadhaney Devotional Rendetion

There are various devotional by the sheer lyrics and quality of rendering , stays in mind forever. I still remember, this song was extensively played almost a decade or so back during Bramorchavam relay in Sun TV, from then on wards this song has been one of my favorites .

This song is from an album called,  Namo Namo Sri Narayana sung by prodigy singer Mahanadhi Shobana and music by Aravinth .  The song has lingering effect and says anandahmey! at the end of each verse offers happiness (anandham)...The song offers elevated experience with the  magical Sanskrit slokas in between each verse.

This is the first album I heard in my collection this year...

032: Energy and Relaxation from the same song - Narayana Sthothram recital by Priya Sisters

Its been a long break, on capturing my thoughts on my favorite music. On the pretext of changes and balancing the work and personal life..my laziness had got an excuse for not doing the justice for the music lover in me. Very few songs, touch the soul and offers inspiration and peace..while we listen to in-numerous songs ,its only a few that make you go dizzy..Its not only the music but the ambience and mood also plays a key role in enjoying the music. Its like a energy vortex, one the spiraling music     is set with correct ambience and mood...the elevation and inspiration the music offer to the listener has no bounds..

I had a similar experience,  this morning . Surprisingly weather in Chennai was relatively better and my mind was also blank without any specific thoughts..but was playing within a note whichwas like  mesmerizing , it did not take a long time for me to recollect the song..This was holy "Narayana Stotram" written by Sri Adi Shankaracharya  and rendered by Priya Sisters,

Here is the beautiful song ..don't miss it...

031: Music alias Raja

Music alias Raja, It's practically not possible for me to talk about music without using Raja's name. Last week during a light moment we were talking about so many stuffs and topic turned towards Raja's Live in Concert. Surprisingly everyone (a team of 5 ppl) every one had watched the program fully, few of us have watched the repeat of the excerpt on youtube. I really wonder would it be possible to bring in a 35 years of wonderful music in some 3 and half hour program. As a matter of fact as of today wikipedia's Ilaiyaraaja discography is still in complete.  Unable to document a geniuses life time itself is a huge loss.

While thats not this post about,  it's understandable that it's not really possible to document all of the geniuses work but if some one makes an attempt on the same it would be well treasured.

Coming back to the point, while we were discussing the topic went on towards old BBC programs and other informative works on the quality and appreciations on IR's work. That reminded me share some of my favourite stuffs about the musical mastero.

029:Bantureethi - Hamasnadam

Saint Sri Thyagaraja, lived a life breathing Rama Nama. He had seen Rama in every form and was living under the protection of Lord through out. Every Song of Sri Thyagaraja has some story or life experience associated with.

In the famous song "Bantureethi Kolu" Sri Thyagaraja swamy pleads with Lord Rama to give him the post of a guard for Rama. Sri Thyagaraja Swamy says that, the guard’s post should be such that he is empowered to destroy all the demons which are Arishadvargas (Arishad Vargas are the six passions of the mind: Kama - lust, craze, desire; Krodha - anger, hatred; Lobha - greed, miserliness, narrow minded; Moha - delusory emotional attachment; Mada or Ahankara - pride, stubborn mindedness; and Matsarya - envy, jealousy, show or vanity, and pride) and since the guard is empowered to do so, he needs such a guard's post

Bhageshri - is the name the Raaga , that can give a pleasant experience..This the Raaga depicts the feeling of woman awaiting the re-union of her lover. It's no surprise, that Shri Arunachala Kavi, used this Raaga, when Shri Hanuman communcates that he has met Mother Janaki.(Shri Seetha Devi) at the end of sundara kanda. 024 :Jasmine strings- String Saraswathi's blog

They say one must have done abishekam(spiritual ablution) to lord Shiva for getting a golden voice, i think the hands that performs the abishekam also would be blesseed with a musical gift that's divine..this is what i think every time i listen to "Veena E.Gayathri" - Veena Saraswathi, who can fill the place with reverberating divine music through the strings in her hands. Any music lover, would need no introduction to this prodigy .
The most feared music critic Late.Sri. Subbudu, said.."She represents the auspicious month of Margazhi among veena players".. is just another feather on her cap.

Interestingly the Veena Queen, has started trying her hands on something along with veena , she is exploring the blog world . Titled Jasmine Strings - she synonymously spreads the musical thoughts like the jasmine spreading the fragrance. Audio tracks are a feature in her blog, where she has hosted few of her tracks .I enjoyed the "Sri Vidyaranya Swami Bhajans" ..hope you too

022 : M.S - Musical face of India

Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi (M.S Amma), needs no introduction to India, she was the first Indian Musician to be awarded Bharat Ratna. Recently i was searching for some carnatic stuff and landed upon this excellent documentary video on MS Amma. It was really excellent. One thing amazes me about MS amma is the elite class she belongs to interacting with Mahatma , Nehru and the lineage of Presidents and PM's of India, Extra ordinary performance in UN..but lived a simple and down to earth life.
Even today when I listen to "Kurai Ondrum illai..." or Baja Govindam or Sriman Narayana ..list is endless..they are the best Tranqulizers. Smt MS and Sri Sadhasivam were the pair made for each other. The charity couple have donated enormous amount of money to the social cause . who will get such a rare blessing , that Sri Venkateshwara of Tirupathi wakes up with the Suprabhatam sung by her.
Anecdote on Smt MS Amma and Sri Sadhasivam

H.Y. Sharada Prasad, a close friend of MS and Sadasivam, writes about their marriage:"It was a remarkable marriage. They made a striking pair. Wherever they went or sat, all eyes turned towards them, because of Subbulakshmi's extraordinary grace and beauty and the large, radiant eyes outshining the diamonds and silks she wore. Sadasivam had a presence which by no means was in the shadows. There he was, upright and broad-shouldered and handsome, in his white khadi and the lines of sacred ash on his forehead. Subbulakshmi seemed to lean on him like the jasmine creeper twining itself around a tall tree. When the two entered a room, one felt as if more lights had been switched on. There were some who called them Parvathi-Parameshwar...."

021 :Music Info - Carnatic : Raaga?

It's like trying to dry the ocean, if some one attempts to create a repository or reference for Music. But the process of collaborative learning is more effective, hence i'm planning..this series. Lets explore the ocean of Music together
What is a Raaga?
A Raaga is a combination of musical notes aka Swaraa(Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Nee). Raaga primarily denotes melody. Ideally there must be at least 5 notes or a maximum of 7 notes (swaras) in a Raaga

"tonal framework for composition and improvisation" -Joep Bor of the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music

Every Raga would have an “Aarohanam” - ascending notes & an “Avrohanam” - descending notes. There are many ragas recognised and played in Carnatic Music and each ragas has its time and season that defines it.

Melakarta or Janya Raagas:
Melakarta is a collection of fundamental Raagas Melakarta ragas are parent ragas (hence known as janaka ragas) from which other ragas may be generated. There are 72 Melakartha Raagas. They are split into 12 groups called chakras, each containing 6 ragas. The ragas within the chakra differ only in the dhaivatham and nishadham notes (D and N), You can find the list of all the 72 Raagas and the chakra's they belong to in the following link http://carnatica.net/sangeet/melachart.htm

020 : Raman Ethani Ramandi - Everlasting Melody

I'm currently lstening to this melody, raman ethanai raman adi.. from the movie "Lakshmi kalyanam".. the song is written by Kaviarasar kannadasan. If i say the lyrics are classic to the core would be like saying Sun is brighter.
Salient part of this song is the charanam where multiple rama nama's are listed and peacefully transcends to ramajeyam japam. I'm listening to this song @ midnight 12:15, and the sheer joy in me made me blog this
